acclimation of fish from LFS with lowered salinity

I would like to hear from other members who've noticed as I have that fish kept at LFS are often not at the salinity they claim to be. I've recently had LFS tell me fish I was taking home was at '19', and assumed they were talking SG, not PPT. The dealer even mentioned at the same time that they kept their reef tanks at '23', leading me to be certain they could only mean SG..... But on testing water in the bag at home I found it was 1.015 (19 PPT). Very difficult to acclimate to your reef tank, and even my QT was not that low..... I'm wondering how widespread is this super low salinity in LFS, and would appreciate recommendations of LFS that do NOT follow that practice.

Some LFS's keep the salinity low because its rumored to be easier on the fish for acclimation. I'd bring a hydrometer along or have them test the water in front of you - this should make it easier to figure out how to get them into your tank. Barring not knowing what the salinity is, an extra long acclimation should make it easier.

Between my tanks, I do about 30 mins and they are always fine. I have never tested LFS salinity, but I do ~3hr acclimation and again, they always turn out well too... only had one death and that was after one day so Im thinking the fish just wasn't healthy.

Don't forget to check the pH when your acclimating. From my expirence, you can drop the salinity a lot faster than you can or should bring it up.
