Right now the only ones in my tower are all submerged so they aren't as effective but they do provide moer surface area so I'm sure they do some good. Ultimately I'd like to get some caulerpa growing in the sump just past the tower to take up any nitrates that are produced by the tower and further reduce the nutrients that come from the system.

That will have to come later when it warms up so I no longer have to keep the tank covered to reduce heat loss.

I considered setting up a sort of bio reactor out of an old bucket. feed it off of the skimmer or from the overflow and have it drain into the sump. Or, just cram the return pump chamber of my sump full of them. Right now there is just the return pump so it seems like a waste of space. I'm not sure how effective it would be though.

For filtering. I'm repurposing the giant skimmer to make it a wet dry system. I know some people are going to flip out but I keep seeing them in large public installations and it near made any sense to me why they are such a bad thing as long as they aren't the only method of filtration that your using.

I'm still very much in need of bio-balls if anyone has any. My tower is just a little under half full right now so I need lot's of them to get the thing filled up.
