Changes to the MBI.. - Wednesday, May 05, 2010 1:04 PM ( #1 ) Share
Currently the MBI only awards points for the successful breeding of marine organisms that will one day end up as proud points of interest in some luck person's display tank. This is a great thing as we are encouraging hobbyists to push the line in breeding new species and helping local fish stores with local sources of safe, healthy fish for their stores rather then selling wild caught specimens.

However we have up until this point pretty much ignored one of the key tools and skills that all of us really must master to be successful and that is the culturing of foods to feed larval fish and inverts. It's also widely speculated that it is the lack of proper food sources of the right size and nutritional value that is the major stumbling block in successfully breeding many of the species we consider nearly impossible today. To address this issue the MBI will soon be expanded to award points for the successful culturing of food items used in breeding practices and encourage hobbyists to attempt new species and new techniques in the culturing of food for breeding efforts.

At this time we have already begun accepting classification requests for food culture species and hope to start accepting establishment reports within the next few weeks from the main MBI website at http://www.marinebreedinginitiative.org/. Shortly after we will be able to accept reports here on the MASM site as well.

This is an awesome idea!  In fact, I know Tal has offered to spend lots of time classifying and identifying things that I'll be catching in a couple weeks from Florida ().  I mentioned this to him, but I'll post here - I'd love to donate a bucket or two of wild live caught plankton to help the cause.   Can't promise what will be in there, but I know there is A. tonsa in the area I'll be collecting from.

Great idea, love it!

Great idea guys .  I'll have to learn a lot about pods now, or I can always ask Joe .

We hope that this will help to promote an often overlooked but very important aspect of captive breeding.

So stay posted everyone. We will make more announcements as we finalize things.
